ABOUT US
On April 2, 2011 our team won the right
to compete in an international underwater robotics competition in Texas
by winning the 2011 MATE Carolina Regional ROV Competition at Coastal
Carolina University. Our school is in Socastee, South Carolina, which is
near Myrtle Beach.
The competition is sponsored by the Marine Advanced Technology Education
Center (MATE) and is being hosted at the the NASA Johnson Space Center's
Neutral Buoyancy Lab in Houston TX in June.
Each year, high school students from around the world compete by
building and operating underwater robots that must complete specific
tasks that change from year-to-year. For 2011, tasks simulate those
required by ROVs that helped to contain the oil spill from BP's
Deepwater Horizon oil rig, which exploded in the Gulf of Mexico last
year. Simulating a deep water
experience, pilots are not allowed to face the pool, but have to
navigate using only the instruments mounted on the robot. Our robot is
constructed from PVC and powered by four propellers.
Our team is: Front Row: Shannon Stone, Kyle Beale, Stephanie Hetzer, Meg
Oshima, Cody. Rear Row: Kit Patel, Matt Ives, Brian Nguyen, Peter
Strauss, Christopher Weeks.
OUR MISSION
We want to compete the Johnson Space
Center on June 16-18. In
order to do that, we will need to raise $3,000. The international
competition includes high schools from USA, Mexico, Taiwan as well as
university teams from Russia, Hong Kong, India, Iran,
England and Egypt. We want to add Socastee, SC to that list.
If you can help, or would simply like more information about our
project, please contact our team advisor, Christopher Weeks at:
